2018 Ad Vivum "Sleeping Lady Vineyard" Yountville Cabernet Sauvignon (Winery Direct Library Release)

Decanter
Review Date: 01/2025The 2018 Sleeping Lady is built on a solid foundation of superbly structured tannins—firm, muscular, and robust. This is the most powerful vintage yet, with broad-shouldered tannins complemented by juniper, sage, black pepper notes and a hint of charcuterie. Medium-bodied on the palate, it offers blackberry and blue fruit aromatics alongside tobacco and espresso bean, with the tannins continuing to build through the finish. This is an impressively fresh and intriguing wine, with generous fruit character yet a coiled, reserved structure that carries remarkable tension. (Drink between 2025-2040) (JC)

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is deep garnet-purple in color. It races out with pure scents of cassis, juicy black plums, and black raspberry plus wafts of dried Provence herbs, mossy tree bark, and crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is firm, grainy, lively, and taut, with muscular fruit and a bright, energetic finish. (LPB)

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Sleeping Lady Vineyard is every bit as impressive from bottle as it was from barrel. A big, statuesque wine, the 2018 impresses with its energy and vibrancy, both of which are great signs for the future. Today, the 2018 is a bit reticent, but the pedigree is there. Blackberry, mocha, gravel, spice, menthol and lavender begin to emerge, but only gradually. The 2018 is a magical wine from Chris Phelps. Don't miss it. (AG)

From the great vineyard site on the western flanks of the Mayacamas, this is an old-world styled wine, with robust structure and power. Cassis and violets are found in abundance, with dense yet cohesive and nearly silky tannins, the oak well-integrated and adding spice and weight. *Cellar Selection* (VB)
Staff Reviews

This is one for the cellar that is likely to continue positive development for another 5+ years, then enjoy a couple decades of perfect drinking. This wine is simply stunning, a perfect reflection of refined and focused power. There’s so much layered intensity and depth, but it's coiled and compacted into the wine’s muscular form. Notes of cassis, lavender, mulberry, briar patch, shaved cedar, cigar box, and graphite. Very fine but multitudinous tannins promise a long life along with the wine’s bright, fresh acidity that makes the aromatics sing. You get the feeling that this wine isn't quite ready to show all its cards quite yet but has the potential to be a perfect wine that can stand toe-to-toe with the best of the best in Napa and beyond.

Email AaronComing from one of Napa's best vineyards and with enough age to make a wine this huge begin to be approachable, this is a beast of a wine. Inky purple in the glass, the depth of the color is a little imposing and a promise of what's to come. The aroma is powerful and rich, almost heady, with layers of oaken spice and dense blackberry jam. There's huge black currant notes and more stewed bramble fruit towards the back of the nose finishing with fresh cut tobacco, nothing too overwhelming or out of balance. The palate is luxurious, with a silky and smooth mouthfeel that abruptly changes once the tannin comes in, still quite grippy but nothing that you can't instantly solve with a nice rich steak and a fat potato. There's just tons of dark and rich fruit, black cherries, blackberry compote, This is an incredibly impressive and powerful wine that absolutely wants to be decanted for a couple hours ahead of time, but will give you so much with each and every sip.
