Alexandre Le Brun "Cuvée Number 1" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 12/2024
Extended time on the lees (more than 10 years!) immediately makes itself known through a yeasty, nutty nose—grabbing my full attention. Hazelnut praline, lemon marmalade, toasted brioche, and a hint of chalk culminates in a lingering finish of honeycomb and lemon hard candies. Though it’s zero dosage, it's incredibly generous both on the nose and across the entire span of the palate. This is all about richness and finesse. The glistening light-gold color, fine perlage, and delicate texture are absolutely mesmerizing. Millésimé 2012: composed mostly of Chardonnay with Pinot Noir and a splash of Meunier. Hat tip to the lovely Deja Overby for opening this beauty up to taste.

This wine is selected from Alex's best parcels and made in very small quantities. It is composed of 55% Chardonnay from the grand cru of Chouilly, 35% Pinot Noir from Sezanne and 15% old vine Meunier from Monthelon. It is entirely barrel fermented, and always aged more than 10 years on the lees. If you like a savory, rich, concentrated champagne with a ton of complexity, this tiny production bottle is for you. I love it with foie gras and rich appetizers! -Gary Westby, K&L
