Stewed cherries, blackcurrants, smoked meat, chili, chocolate and espresso beans on the nose. It’s full-bodied with firm, round tannins and fresh acidity. Concentrated and juicy with a pleasant herbal hint.

The 2019 Lucero Syrah is the first bottling from the new style I have tasted, and what a change! It has a Northern Rhône profile with intense aromas of tapenade, violets, smoked bacon and tar. It's pungent but with a sense of lightness that I like very much. There's no trace of oak, and there's great purity. (LG)

Cool climate Syrah is a thing, for those of us who are into it, and the cool and dry climate of the Casablanca valley with its sandy soils is perfect for Syrah. The aromatics are mixed berries, red, black and blue. There is that bacon fat smoky thing as well as the black pepper and herbs. It is a perfect introduction to that varietal. It has that perfect sweet savory combination to the aromatics. On the palate it does what I love about Chilean wines, ripe fruit and a clean dry finish, rich fruit, layers of spice, enough tannin and acid to let you know that it is there and leave you wanting more.

Notes

Kingston Family Vineyards are located in the far western portion of the Casablanca Valley. Inspired by the man, the wines, the work and vineyards of Gary Pisoni, they designed and planted their first vineyards in the late 1990’s. They specialize in Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Sauvignon Blanc, the vines planted on the far western portion of the Valley where the soils are red clay and decomposed granite. The coastal climate and poor soils are ideal for these cool to moderate climate varietals. In 2016 the winery started to convert to organics and they were certified in 2020. In the winery they are using less new oak than previous vintages, and with the addition of concrete tanks. 95 points Tim Atkin MW "One of two brilliant Syrahs from Amael Orrego, who is making some of the best expressions of the grape in South America, this is all produced with clone 300 and is very much a cool climate style. Dense, yet refreshing, it has notes of fresh blood, orange zest, tapenade and blackberry, with a backbone of acidity and sinewy tannins."
