Review Date: 04/2022This is aromatically similar to the Chiroubles but with just a touch more elegance. The cool and restrained nose mixes both red and dark fruit aromas with those of discreet spice and floral wisps. There is very good detail and energy to the more refined if slightly less concentrated flavors that possess a lovely texture on the lingering finale that firms up as it sits on the palate. The regular bottling of 2020 Fleurie from the Lafarges has turned out beautifully and is quite red fruity for the vintage, offering up scents of cherries, sweet cranberries, stony soil tones, gamebird, a touch of orange peel and a topnote of white pepper. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied, long and tangy, with a good core and soil undertow, bright acids and just a whisper of tannin adding structural conviction on the backend. Good juice. The vineyards are Belair and Cercillon. Clean mid purple. No great bouquet first up. Then it starts to builds, with peonies. A little more tension and structure compared to Chiroubles, nicely nuanced in pretty red fruit, good acid balance and persistence.

The 2020 Fleurie, which comes from two parcels on pink granite soil, includes 30% whole bunch. The nose is quite backward and required some coaxing from the glass. The palate is more open at the moment, quite intense with supple tannins, tart red fruit laced with white pepper on the finish. Fine. (NM)
