Wine & Spirits
Review Date: 10/2020It’s easy to imagine sailors drinking this wine on a journey between two continents, the overt sweetness of its black plum and fig flavors sustaining their energy through a long voyage, and lifting their spirits along the way. The flavors are dynamic and edged in oceanic funk- it has the dark salinity of barnacles and other sea creatures from the deep, that shadowy saltiness balanced by sweetness, downright yummy.

Notes
Begun in 1996, Broadbent Madeira was inspired by Bartholomew Broadbent’s father, Michael Broadbent, who called Madeira his "desert island wine," and who played a crucial role in sourcing the wines and establishing the blends. Grapes are manually harvested in September, according to ripeness. Totally destemmed, crushed and pressed. The must obtained was allowed to ferment with wild yeasts at controlled temperature of 61°F in stainless tanks, then stopped by addition of neutral grape spirit in order to keep the desired sweetness. Aged in and old American oak cask 650L in the traditional canteirp system where the barrels are stored in the warmest parts of the lodges. 19% ABV, 9.34 g/L TA, 88 g/L RS.
