Wine Advocate

Reviewed March 2019
Fruit for this comes from vines planted in 1953. A barrel sample to be bottled in March, the 2017 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard has a very deep purple-black, opaque color and very perfumed nose of charcuterie, dried blue flowers and granite with a core of lush, ripe black and blue fruits. Full-bodied and huge in the mouth, it's very perfumed and has lovely dark fruit layers, framed by very firm, chewy tannins and just enough freshness to lift the long, dense finish. (EB)

The 2017 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard is just gorgeous. Inky, powerful and plush, the Hayne is so expressive today. All of the vineyard signatures come through - especially the purity of the fruit - but with less of the tannic heft the wine can show in its youth. (AG)

Notes

Founded by Larry Turley in 1993, Turley Wine Cellars has become one of California’s leading champions of historic vineyards, old vines, and organically farmed Zinfandel and Petite Syrah. Hayne Vineyard in St. Helena was planted to Petite Syrah in 1953 and is head-trained, dry-farmed, and rooted in alluvial, gravelly loam, producing exceptionally concentrated, structured, and long-lived wines. The 2017 is a profound expression of the site, combining inky depth, floral and earthy complexity, and the balance that has made Hayne one of Turley’s most celebrated vineyards.
