Reviewed September 2021The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is a big wine, but it is also surprisingly approachable for a young Kongsgaard Cabernet. Bright and vibrant, the 2019 offers up copious dark red/purplish fruit, mocha, wild flowers and pomegranate, with a firm spine of tannin that gives the wine its energy and shape. The 2019 will be positively stellar with a bit of time in the cellar. Actually, it already is. (AG)

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley showed well. A beautiful array of red, blue, and black fruits as well as darker chocolate and smoked tobacco define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied on the palate, with good overall concentration, a little bit of surprisingly jagged acidity, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. I like its overall density, as well as the quality of the tannins, and it's going to benefit from a solid 2-3 years of bottle age. I followed this bottle for multiple days, and it was only with air that I questioned its overall acid balance, and I suspect this will all resolve with short-term cellaring. It should have a long life.
Notes
Fifth-generation Napa natives John and Maggy began their endeavor in the 1970s planting The Judge vineyard on the Kongsgaard family land near Napa. The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon contains a small amount of Merlot and is sourced from estate vineyards.
