The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is very pure and intense on the nose, a melange of black and blueberry fruit infused with pressed violet petals. The oak here is seamlessly integrated. The palate is opulent on the entry with black plum and boysenberry jam. There is a subtle confit element to this Charmes-Chambertin with grippy tannins on the finish that delivers a subtle bitter/sappy edginess. (NM)

Firm reduction renders the nose unreadable at present. There is however good freshness to the slightly bigger and richer yet still quite sleek flavors that possess focused power on the impressively precise, youthfully austere and quite serious finish. This doesn't have quite the same grace as the Combottes but it's definitely a quality effort as it's built-to-age and a wine that's going to need at least half a dozen years of patience first while rewarding 15+.

More perfumed than the Combottes, with floral and fruit purity interlaced. There’s a sweetness of red fruit in the aroma even without any unwanted sweetness on the palate, which is marked by a savoury quality that is perhaps partly oak but also with a slight earthiness. Dry, dry but very fine tannins. You have to take this slowly because it is really subtle and very very long. Utmost beauty in the tannins. I could drink this now but not sure I dare put the start of the drinking window as 2021 when it isn’t even bottled. 18/20 points (JH)

Notes

93-95 points Jasper Morris for Inside Burgundy: "All is in fact from Mazoyères, up at the top. Totally purple, a little bit reductive as if the lees have currently pervaded the whole cuvée. Comes across as a little bit sterner today than I think it will be as Charmes has a habit of being joyous and exuberant. At the moment the younger and older vines are still apart and the wine typically comes together only after blending (I am told). Having said which, there is a more than pleasing sweetness of pure red fruit that is creeping up on me at the finish." (11/2020)
