Cocchi Barolo Chinato (500ml)

Review Date: 12/2020

An ancient Piemontese remedy to reduce fever and improve digestion. Made with Barolo DOCG wine, aromatised with cinchona, calisaya bark, rhubarb, gentian root and cardamom seed. Served to guests by hospitable ‘viticultori’. Deep red with a light brown rim. A complete festive meal, this elegant wine has baked spicy plums, succulent blueberries, fresh rosemary, dried roses and savoury meatiness. The tart and juicy fruit is perfectly balanced by the bitter herbal notes. Delightful at dessert with chocolate, and more amazing when warmed. 18.5/20 points (AR)

Notes

Pronounced key-not-o. To begin with, this specialized wine product will not appeal to every wine drinker out there. But for those of us with esoteric palates, and for those who appreciate the natural flavoring agent that gives tonic water its distinctive bite (quinine), a glass of Cocchi's Barolo Chinato is not a vinous experience you're likely to soon forget! In addition to quinine bark, there's rhubarb, gentian, and a final addition of somewhat secret spices including cardamom seed. This is a pleasantly bitter tipple that ranks up there with Fernet Branca as one of the world's best digestivos.
