Bright, vivid red fruit appeal, with bags of energy and vitality, power and warmth. Shows great concentration without being too wild. An altogether supremely satisfying glass of wine that isn't tiring or overbearing. A great price too. Outstanding!

This 2019 Tempranillo from Bodegas Santa Rufina is a serious wine! The nose is packed with dark chocolate and cherry, there are herbal notes that peak through with an intriguing smokiness. The palate is rich with cherry cola, fig, and an earthiness, while the tannin structure is fine and restrained. Very elegant. Don't overlook this wine, it will be great pairing with summer barbeques or on its own. Cheers.

From an underappreciated region producing a seldom recognized style, this wine might be the sleeper of the season. Bright and fresh, it boasts enticing cherry and pomegranate flavors enhanced by mountain herbs and a subtle nuttiness. Most impressive, however, is the perfect balance it attains- though forward and uninhibited, it hails most decidedly from old world vines and winemaking tradition. While animated and light, it has dimension and complexity beyond its boisterous first impression. The only way to delve deeply enough to fully understand this charming coquette is to buy multiple bottles and sit down with it over many evenings.

This bottling has a deep, dark nose of chocolate cherry, smoke and thyme. On the palate, it is plush and inviting, with black cherry, fig, ripe red plum and a very nice, light tannic bite on the finish. The tannins are very fine and elegant, something very unexpected in a wine at this price point. This one will be super versatile for food pairing. Anything from a barbecued chicken, to pork sausage to fire-roasted vegetables and pungent goat cheese. In a word, superb!

Notes

Cigales is a wine region that we do not see frequently in the states. It is approximately halfway between Ribera del Duero, to its East, and Toro, to its west. It is not exactly located in the Duero river valley but it is along the Pisuerga river that feeds into the Duero on its journey to Portugal. It is a very old region, with historical importance but it has yet to make a big mark in the modern wine marketplace. Being on the same central plateau as Ribera del Duero it too is a region based on elevation, most vineyards are above 750 meters, it has a continental climate, and stony, very poor soils, and the primary varietal in Tempranillo.
