From the Alta Vista Vineyard, this impressive red is earthy in cedar, pencil shaving and dried herb. A violet note highlights the elegant palate, which is restrained in oak and integrated in tannin. The fruit is savory in character, with lasting focus on the finish. (VB)

This is a balanced red, showing blackberry and bark with chili and some herbs. It’s medium-to full-bodied with nice drinkability and a succulent, flavorful finish. Iodine, pine needles, slate and graphite undertones. Subtle.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Fission emerges from Alta Vista, on Moon Mountain. A dark, potent wine, the 2019 captures plenty of mountain energy in its savory, earthy flavor profile. Dark cherry, mocha, spice, new leather, licorice and chocolate all flesh out. My impression is that less new oak and longer élevage might bring out even more character. This is certainly an impressive debut from Mai Errazuriz and Rodrigo Soto. (AG)

Phenomenal mountain Cabernet, one of the finest I've tasted in many years. This is the real deal. Sourced from vines high on Moon Mountain planted in 1971! These gnarled old vines bring forth a genuine character of powerful, brooding, mountain grown Cabernet. Dense black / purple fruit - blackcurrant, mulberry, damson, briary tones, mountain chaparral, crushed rock, cigar box, leather. Wonderfully expressive fruit, quintessential of the varietal. Good structure and noble tannin provide an excellent frame for the wine to adhere to. Drinking great now as a young expression, but I'm sure this will be a stunning 10 year wine...and probably will see 20 years in good form too. A steal in terms of value for money vs its Napa neighbors.

If you like mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, you must discover Far Mountain Winery, run by husband and wife winemaking team Mai Errazuriz and Rodrigo Soto. Their specialty is "dramatic wines from dramatic sites." All single vineyard wines from Sonoma Valley and the Moon Mountain District (on the border between Napa and Sonoma) you get beautiful concentration balanced by high elevation acidity. One of their flagship Cabernets is "Fission" sourced from the Alta Vista Vineyard on Moon Mountain. We have two releases right now - the 2021 and the 2019. The 2019 is their inaugural vintage and is already showing layers of complexity that were surprising to me since it's not that old. Full bodied, silky, with loads of savory dark fruit, blackberry, spice, eucalyptus, dried herbs, violets, leather, and a vein of minerality from Alta Vista's volcanic soils!

Notes

Far Mountain is a wonderful project from Rodrigo Soto (Estate Director at Quintessa). The Fission Cabernet comes from the Alta Vista Vineyard situated high on Moon Mountain. The vines were planted in 1971! These are among some of the oldest Cabernet vines in all of California. Planted on low yielding St. George rootstock, dry-farmed in terracotta red, volcanic clay soils strewn with boulders, this rugged mountain site is cooled by the high elevation locale, and produces very powerful, authentic, old-school Cabernet. Simply stunning! (Ryan Woodhouse, K&L Domestic buyer)
