2010 Bodegas Casa Juan "Señor de Lesmos" Gran Reserva Rioja

One of the most remarkable traditions of Rioja is the long cellaring many bodegas undertake on behalf of the wine drinker, without any premium added! This tradition makes no sense from a financial or logistical point of view, and yet many wineries, Casa Juan included, continue to hold onto their Gran Reserva wines for years beyond what the appellation dictates, only releasing them when they are perfectly mature and ready to drink. The 2010 “Señor de Lesmos” Gran Reserva is a great example of this – savory, earthy and herbal on the nose, this wine is bursting with complex aromatics that came together over the past 15 years. Tobacco, tea leaf, graphite, dried oregano… every minute in the glass seems to unveil a new aroma. This is a wine of contemplation, but it’s also very approachable. Medium-bodied, with a lingering finish, this wine would be perfect with chorizo or grilled steak, or even just a good conversation with friends.

Now this is a special occasion wine that needs no special occasion! Gran Reserva is a special style of wine, they are not made every year because not every year does the wine have the ability to spend the time in oak to qualify for the category and come out the other side as not too oaky. This wine, at 14 years old, has come out the other side of the time in oak and additional time in bottle like it was nothing! What do you mean? There is a crazy amount of still fresh dark berry fruit to this wine. It takes a second to find it, you have to look past the ridiculous complexity of the spice, mixed fresh and dried herbs, leather, exotic woods to find it but it is there, and once you find it, it just grows and grows and grows. What a nose! There are only a handful of wines from around the world that can offer such an aromatically complex nose, and not at this price point! It is on the palate that you get a sense of the age of the wine. It is in the softer tannins, the round mellow settled-in thing that happens with older Rioja. It has an ease to it, you can tell that it does not want to try and impress you. You get it or you don't, that's fine with it. There is still a freshness to the dark berry fruit too. It is medium weight, mellow and complex. This is a wine for hanging out and nibbling on some cheese or a really great, simply prepared cut of meat.

Another lovely release from Senor de Lesmos. "Old school" nose with black fruits, tobacco, earth, leather, and sandalwood. Quite a bit different on the palate. It is full and rich, with dark red fruits, baking spices and mellow oak. Soft and supple with fine-grained tannins. Bordeaux fans will love this one. A great little Reserva for under thirty dollars! Kirk needs to talk them into selling us mags of this!

This winery produces year after year excellent well priced wines. The 2010 is no exception. The nose is interesting and complex, a pleasant introduction to what is to come. In the mouth it is full bodied and dry, with notes of earth. A great food wine, it will go well with hearty foods.

Notes

Located in the beautiful medieval hilltop village of Laguardia in Rioja Alavesa, Casa Juan is a small, family-owned winery that consistently produces aged Riojas that are honest, detailed and soulful expressions of the region. They are also some of most sensibly priced wines in the region, with the quality far outpacing their modest prices, which is why Casa Juan remains one of the most popular wineries we import directly, with a loyal and growing fanbase. The winery's origins trace back to the first half of the 20th century, when it occupied a historic underground cellar built beneath what had once been Laguardia's old flour mill. Its modern chapter, however, began in 1995 when Ángel Escudero and his wife, Araceli Sanchís, purchased and restored the historic winery while carefully preserving its traditional character. Today, Angel, along with his siblings (CArmen, SAntiago, JUlio and ANgel = Casa Juan) run the simple yet functional bodega, along with slightly under 30 hectares of vineyards they help to farm primarily themselves with no herbicides or pesticides. The wines typically contain mostly Tempranillo, with up to 15% Mazuelo. Most of the vineyards are mature, averaging around 45 years old, with some vines up to 100 years old. Primary fermentation occurs always with indigenous yeasts in concrete tanks, where the wines are eventually racked to barrels, which are used up to seven years and consist primarily of American oak.
