The 2019 Syrah from Ex Post Facto was made entirely with whole clusters and spent, "a zillion years in the fermenter, as always," quips winemaker Greg Brewer. It's fantastically expressive this vintage, with pure scents of red and black currants, cracked pepper, mint, coffee beans and wildflowers. Medium-bodied and silty in texture, its intense, spicy fruits are perfectly ripe, and fresh acidity adds crunchy appeal on the long, layered finish. Yum! (EB)

This is cool-climate Syrah on full amplification, courtesy of Greg Brewer. Aromas of cracked peppercorn, tar, graham cracker, raw lamb and elderberry show on the nose. The raw-meat flavors of the nuanced while bold palate are intense, and dusted with accents of pepper, bay leaf, rosemary and lavender. (MK)

Recently named <i>Wine Enthusiast</i>'s 2020 Winemaker of the Year, Greg Brewer has crafted another region-defining wine. This gorgeous red is textbook cool-climate Syrah, demonstrating the heights of what can be achieved in Santa Barbara County. Once poured into glass, the wine charges forth, offering the taster a bouquet of fresh berries and wildflowers. The seductive nose offers up notes of blueberries, blackberries, herbs, white pepper, lilacs, and a whiff of wood spice. On the palate, the wine is bright and clean, lithe of body, with great intensity and energy. The wine's charm is revealed in how it creeps up on you with its ethereal nature. I'd have to say that this is the best Ex Post Facto Syrah I've tasted to date. It clearly earns the full weight of the 95-point Wine Enthusiast score and reaffirms Greg's standing as one of the region's most talented winemakers. At this price, I strongly encourage you to put away a few bottles for the future and grab a few to drink now.

Notes

The list of achievements for Greg Brewer grows longer and longer with the passing of every vintage. From his days crafting the wines at Melville, to the founding of his own personal brands Brewer-Clifton & Diatom. He's logged nearly three decades of experience yet remains defiantly youthful and as driven as ever. The entirety of his career has been on making the best wines possible within the Sta. Rita Hills and he's a relentless ambassador for the entire Santa Barbara County wine growing region. With Ex Post Facto, Greg gets to step outside of his Burgundian focus at Brewer-Clifton and explore his passion for cool climate Syrah, inspired by the monumental achievements created in the northern Rhône region of France. Tasting through Greg's portfolio, it's quite clear that he's earned the mounting accolades bestowed upon him over the years, culminating in being named Winemaker of the Year 2020 by Wine Enthusiast magazine. Yet, knowing Greg, the best is likely yet to come. You owe it to yourself to know these wines.
