Tasted alongside the other two Barton wines – Mauvesin and Langoa – this seeks to outshine with a nose of dark and curranty fruits, slate, liquorice, tar and a touch of green peppercorn. And outshine it does. This dark but lifted sense of composed concentration is translated in precise fashion onto the palate, which is packed out with dark and polished fruits, showing density but also drive and tension, beneath which there hides a firm but imposing grip. This is full of energy and very impressive, and is clearly set for the long haul. An absolutely top notch example of the château’s style which does everything my palate desires.

The 2020 Leoville Barton has a deep garnet-purple color. It is incredibly primary and youthful with expressive scents of crème de cassis, ripe juicy plums, and black raspberries, opening out to hints of vanilla pod, coffee, star anise, and tilled soil. Medium-bodied, the palate is beautifully restrained, with lovely tension and firm, very fine-grained tannins, finishing so long and achingly graceful. Wow! (LPB)

The flagship from this great château, the 2020 Château Léoville Barton checks in as 85.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14.5% Merlot that saw 60% new French oak. It has fabulous aromatics of crème de cassis, graphite, liquid violets, spring flowers, and background oak. Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, its purity of fruit is just about off the chart, it has a great mid-palate, and enough tannins to warrant 7-8 years of bottle age. This is another sensational wine from this team that will have 30-40 years of overall longevity. 97+

Aromas of dark berries, ash, tar, blackcurrants and lead pencil, following through to a medium to full body, with firm and integrated tannins and a medium, chewy finish. Needs four to six years to soften and come together. Very tight and nicely structured.

Léoville-Barton's 2020 has all the components to be one of its all-time greats, which speaks volumes, considering the property's reputation. The vintage itself works perfectly with everything that makes the wine so distinctive, providing terrific concentration, structure, and remarkable depth. It wouldn't be a surprise to see this one going strong for decades. Aromatically, the wine delivers a traditional St-Julien profile, with Cabernet-driven notes of cassis, tobacco, and florals. On the palate, it is pure class—concentrated, layered, yet refined—offering that sense of old-school claret with structure. The tannins are extremely well-managed, and the texture gives it a luxurious edge. Léoville-Barton is one of the greats, a wine that always retains its character and could be from nowhere else. Trends come and go, but they are as dependable as it gets. Add the 2020 vintage, however, and it's on another level altogether. To be able to get it direct from Bordeaux at this kind of pricing makes it, once again, one of the best collectible values in the region.

This wine was huge when tasted from 2 week old sample. Reserved in the nose, but opens with air. Red rose aromas and cassis flavors. Very well structured for the cellar.

Notes

97 points Robert Millman for Terroir Sense: "Among the most classical wine made in Bordeaux, this takes us back the way Bordeaux was made and tasted 40-60 years ago. Beautiful clarity in the wine’s expression and structure. The wine talks a detailed, expressive yet restrained language. Grand Vin as Clive Coates used to say." (01/2023)
