The Wine Independent

Review Date: 06/2023

The 2020 La Gaffeliere is composed of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it soars out of the glass with expressive notes of redcurrant jelly, plum preserves, and kirsch, plus nuances of dark chocolate, violets, pencil lead, and fragrant soil with a waft of crushed rocks. The medium-bodied palate is so tightly wound, featuring very fine layers of red and black fruit intertwined with floral and mineral nuances, supported by highly pixilated, super-ripe tannins and amazing tension, finishing very long and with the energy of an atomic bomb. This is stunning! (LPB)

The 2020 La Gaffelière is superb. Rich, dense and explosive. Black cherry, gravel, licorice, grilled herbs and menthol race out of the glass. Deep, pliant and explosive, the 2020 is magnificent. At this stage, the 2020 is an infant, but that won't be a problem in a few years. This vivid, statuesque Saint-Émilion is nothing short of thrilling. (AG)

Deep and intense notes of plums and blackberries with dark chocolate, toasted spices, walnut, crushed graphite and wet stones. Full-bodied with layers of ripe, velvety tannins that flow in a firm stream throughout the palate. Very structured. Delicious chocolate-wrapped black and blue fruit with spiced character and a really long finish.

This wine's ripe tannins and fine perfumes come from the 40% Cabernet Franc in the blend. The structure is powerful even if masked by the generous black fruits. The wine has great potential. *Cellar Selection* (RV)

La Gaffelière is one of our favorites at K&L, and while this vintage has somehow flown a bit under the radar for them, it’s about as great as it gets from this estate. Dual 98-point scores call it “the energy of an atomic bomb” and “nothing short of thrilling,” and I’ll add that our current price is borderline ridiculous for what it delivers. With prime Right Bank real estate bordering Ausone, La Gaffelière makes the most of the 2020 vintage—a potential all-timer for Saint-Émilion. It combines the concentration of the growing season, the minerality of its terroir, and an appealing brightness all at once. Aromatically compelling, it offers a core of red fruit layered with mouthwatering acidity. A beautiful texture lends a sense of luxury, while fine tannins provide character and structure without sacrificing elegance. All the best of La Gaffelière is on display here, and at our current retail price (with perfect property-direct provenance), it stands as a poster child for exceptional value in Bordeaux.

One of the best 2020s I have tasted. Fabulous aromas of black raspberry and blackberry. Very perfumey. Quite full-bodied-thick and palate filling. Lush, sweet, and sexy. Seamless-regal. A super value for sure. Tastiing at the property-20% less production than 2019. 60% Merlot and 40% Cab Franc. Asian spice aromas with some chocolate thrown in. Super fresh and elegant. Brings back memories of the great La Gaffeliere’s -1953-1955-1959-1961-1964.
