Reviewed April 2021Big, broad and extracted, this year's Darius II is an immense, extraordinarily deep, mouthfilling Cabernet with fruity substance to spare. More significantly, it is also as well-structured as it is boundlessly rich, and, while backed with a full measure of ageworthy tannins and an absolute baby that will age famously for years and years, it already shows a surprising sense of winemaking polish for a wine of its youth and size. Put it away in a dark place deep in the cellar for six to ten years, and count on it drinking beautifully as it reaches its twentieth birthday. Please be in no hurry here. *Three Stars*

Composed of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Darius II has a deep garnet-purple color and subtle scents of kirsch, Black Forest cake and warm cassis with hints of redcurrant jelly, camphor and forest floor plus a waft of lavender. The medium to full-bodied palate is elegantly styled with soft-spoken, quietly intense, mineral-laced black fruit layers supported by velvety tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and fragrant. It is a very different style from the blockbuster 2016, and yet I love this expression too, which beautifully captures the 2018 vintage. (LPB) 93+

A soft, silky red with blackberry, cherry and currant aromas and flavors. It’s full-bodied with a juicy, savory finish to the ripe fruit. Drinkable now, but better in a year or two, when it will open more.

Rich and ripe, but well-focused, offering red and black currant notes stretching out over a mix of loam and singed cedar, with a late echo of sweet bay leaf. For fans of the power style. (JM, Web-2021)
