2017 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echézeaux Grand Cru (nicked label)

Decanter
Review Date: 01/2020Delicate, light and pale in colour, this pure, scented Échézeaux shows how well the vines bounced back from the catastrophic 2016 harvest, when frost resulted in super concentrated yields of only 6hl/ha. Spicy, savoury and appealingly perfumed, with notes of red berries, fresh tobacco and green malt from 75% whole cluster fermentation, medium weight, sappy tannins, redcurrant and raspberry fruit and a slightly bitter, almost medicinal undertone. Drinking Window 2025 - 2032. (TA)

Notes
94-96 points, Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "Bright even purple. Very light reduction here, also the stems come out very well. Lifted purple fruit, seems quite exotic and full of energy before refining back to greater elegance, and beautifully long. Could use a little more elegance but this is so fine and graceful. For interest, we also tried the same wine in a cigar shaped barrel, the idea being to keep the wine more in touch with its lees. It showed the oak more and the whole bunch effect less, with a greater intensity of red- and black-currant fruit, and a touch more acidity. Very interesting." (11/2018)
