This very special cask of blended malt was already a mystery before we teaspooned it with a few milliliters of Macallan. Sold to us only as "Speyside" malt, it included a thorough nudge and a winkle. The unspoken truth about these special casks (we bought four of them) is that they come from the finest distillery that's currently in operation in Speyside. This family owned legend continues to produce some of the most interesting and high quality malt anywhere on the market, but their signature has always been the Sherry Casks. That's part of why these casks are so exciting. The entire lot was aged in refill ex-bourbon barrels and while it falls distinctly outside the standard character of the distillery bottlings, the inherent quality fo the spirit remains astounding. After 28 long years in the less than active casks the true character of the spirit remains exquisitly intact. Unctuous and rich the natural 93.8 proof goes completely unnoticed, instead showing dense orchard fruit, salted caramel sauce and pungent wild honey. At this ridiculous price, most will probably assume it's a gimmick or a ruse, but we have know doubts that you'll be asking yourself the very same question we did when we tasted this gorgeous cask, "is this perhaps the finest Speyside I've ever had?"
