Bold amounts of green peppercorn, sansho pepper, mixed olives and iodine meet with a tense black-raspberry aroma on this cool-climate Syrah. The palate is wild and amazingly herbal in flavor, with tea leaf, nettle and bay leaf elements and just enough lingering dark-berry fruit to fill it out. (MK)

From the same vineyard (John Sebastiano), the 2018 Syrah Franc de Pied is deeper purple and offers more density in its blue and black fruits, ground pepper, smoked game, and beef blood-like aromas and flavors. This rich, full-bodied beauty has ripe tannins, good acidity, and again, offers a Cornas-like character. I love it, and it's the finest wine I've tasted under this label.

The Franc de Pied block at John Sebastiano Vineyard is a specific planting of low-yielding, own-rooted Alban clone Syrah. The 2018 expression of this fruit is markedly more savoury, wide, and persistent than the Sta. Rita Hills bottling, which is sourced from the grafted section of John Sebastiano Vineyard. It has aromas of tobacco smoke, pan-seared bacon and blackberries while grilled meat, cloves and fresh lavender unwind on the long, tenacious finish. (ML)

To my taste, this is prototypical Syrah. When you want a textbook definition of what great Syrah should taste like, this should be the model. This wine exhibits all the glorious hallmarks that make it one of the true noble varietals. There are aspects of black olives, rosemary, smoke, and a fruit bowl of berries that ooze from the glass. The wine is plush with mouth coating texture yet compact and succinct enough to glide over your palate with authority. I suspect that this wine will soon be considered a benchmark California red as its trajectory is through the roof. Already a critics darling, the word is getting out about this one.

Vintage after vintage Peter & Amy from Holus Bolus have consistently impressed me with the quality & complexity they are able to evoke from the terroir of the Sta. Rita Hills, to a point where I feel "great Syrah" and Holus Bolus should be synonymous. The 2018 vintage of Franc de Pied is no exception, displaying this variety at its finest. Fruit from the famed John Sebastiano vineyard sets the stage for this wine with its concentration and depth the own rooted vines provide. This sends your palate on an adventure of dark juicy berries, lavender, smokey cured meats, black pepper, and an array of savory herbs and minerals. An outstanding addition to your cellar or a night of smoked BBQ.

This expression always excites the taste buds, and 2018 might be the best vintage I've tasted. Luscious, herbaceous and concentrated, it boasts a melange of ripe, dark berries, rhubarb and cracked black pepper, held aloft by a firm core of brilliant acid and minerals. Throughout it all, that smoky, meaty character of the Syrah adds dimension to an already gorgeous wine. Though a dream with ribs, brisket or pork chops, it quite frankly could be a meal in and of itself.

Notes

The "Franc de Pied" Syrah from Holus Bolus has quickly become a seminal and top-rated wine from the Sta. Rita Hills. The last two vintages have been utterly brilliant. Produced by two of the most respected winemakers in Santa Barbara County are the husband-and-wife tandem of Peter Hunken and Amy Christine, MW. Peter has been mastering his craft since 2001, making wine at both Stolpman and Piedrassasi. Amy earned her Master of Wine back in 2013 making her one of only thirteen women in the US to achieve this remarkable feat. The fruit is sourced from a single block of own-rooted Alban clone Syrah vines within the John Sebastiano vineyard. The result is otherworldly.
