Review Date: 02/2019As to the second wine of Château Haut Bailly, it too is fabulous stuff in 2016. A blend of 47% each of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with the balance Cabernet Franc, the 2016 La Parde Haut Bailly offers notable purity as well as medium to full-bodied notes of blackcurrants, dried herbs, flowers, and spice. It’s a layered, seamless wine from this estate that has no hard edges, beautiful balance, and a great finish. It’s already delivering loads of pleasure but will keep for 15+ years.

This second wine of Haut-Bailly is about 30% of the harvest. It is packed with blackberry and black plum fruits. The richness is contrasted by the firm structure at the back of the wine. Dark tannins and ripe acidity support the fruitiness. (RV)

A firm wine at 81IPT, the tannins are a little tighter than the grand vin, although nothing is masking those supple black brambly fruits. From a blend of 47% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc, representing 25% of overall production., aged in 30% new oak. Following Dubourdieu, his long-term colleagues Valerie Lavigne, Christophe Olivier and Axel Marchal are consulting. (JA)

A firm and velvety red with berry and tobacco character and hints of walnuts. Medium body, round and juicy tannins and a medium finish.

Coming from one of my favorite vintages at this address, 2016 La Parde Haut-Bailly is a great testament to the top-notch releases coming from Veronique Sanders and her team, year after year. Now called Haut Bailly II, we still have a sweet spot for La Parde, as it has been a go-to at K&L for decades now. Whatever it's named, the wine simply delivers. Aromatically there are more black fruits and florals, but it is brighter on the palate, with red fruits, minerality, and a bit of cedar on the long, slightly spicy finish. Texturally, that compact and concentrated (but not heavy) character of the Grand Vin shows through. I find this bottle just to be at the early stages of maturity—a few tertiary notes are starting to show up, but just around the edges. Either way, this delivers a to of character and depth, and is another shining example of the incredible 2016 vintage. 47% each Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with the balance being 6% Cabernet Franc.
