This is a one-off bottling of a special plot of old vines. Full body, dense and polished with a beautiful presence and balance. It's tannic wine but polished and textured. More class. Great length. Only four barrels made.

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Golden Hill is every bit as impressive as it was when I first tasted it a few years ago. Pure Cabernet Sauvignon on this block yields a decidedly savory, mineral mountain Cabernet. Dried herbs, tobacco, leather, iron, gravel and game are front and center, while fruit is pushed more into the background. Next to the straight Cabernet, the Golden Hill is decidedly more backward. A rare single-site bottling from Mayacamas, the Golden Hill Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced from some of the highest-elevation vines on the hillside of Mount Veeder, planted in 1989. This wine is captivating from the first sniff: seductive, floral, powerful and constantly evolving. It perfectly encapsulated the dense, rustic and saline power that Mount Veeder fruit is known for, and should continue to do so for at least the next three decades. (ML)

There's just a hint of development to the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Golden Hill, which boasts scents of cassis and damp, loamy earth. From a single block of Cabernet Sauvignon planted in 1989, it's medium-bodied and streamlined in shape, framed by silky tannins and crisp acids. Just entering its plateau of maturity, it should continue to drink well for another 15 years or so. (JC)

Notes

From a small single block high on the Mayacams Estate comes Golden Hill. A parcel of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon growing in particularly rugged volcanic soils. Sadly this renowed block, singled out for its exceptional quality and unique character, was destroyed in the 2017 wild fires that ravaged the region. This is a tiny release, direct from the winery and is VERY limited.
