Disgorged in November 2018, Ayala's 2013 Brut Blanc de Blancs offers up an elegant bouquet of lemon oil, English walnuts, crisp yellow apples, linden blossom and hints of praline to come with bottle age. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with racy acids, a delicate mousse and a fine-boned, elegant profile. Concluding with a long and nicely defined finish, this vibrant and intense wine is one of the finest wines Ayala has released for some time. (WK)

Made from 100% Chardonnay sourced from the Grand Cru villages of Mesnil-sur-Oger, Chouilly, and Cramant, this 2013 has an energetic nose expressing elegant notes of citrus and chamomile, with a minty overtone. The crystalline palate is driven by limestone-based acidity. (YC)

The 2013 Le Blanc de Blancs from Ayala is 100% Chardonnay sourced from three Grand Cru villages and 2 Premier Cru villages, all on the Côtes des Blancs. It offers a classic Blanc de Blancs nose of crushed citrus and lemon curd as well as notes of white flowers, toasted almonds, and freshly baked bread. Rich, medium-bodied, and beautifully textured on the palate, it shows the cooler, pure, focused style of the vintage yet has terrific depth and length. Count me impressed.

A dense and flavorful blanc de blancs with lots of cooked-apple and sweet pie-crust character. Full body. Rich and almost decadent. Heavier than some, but turns fresh at the end.

I have been lucky enough to drink this beauty twice over the last weeks! I tasted this the first time while closing the store with the crew and it showed wonderfully on its own. The creamy texture and fine bead really shined like this. Having at home with a trout and salmon mousse sealed the deal- this has the power for food as well as the grace to stand on its own. Both times the wine showed gorgeous white flowers framing the fresh toast on the nose. In the mouth it is a rounder blanc de blancs, with excellent white peach like fruit. The turnaround on the finish is what makes this wine truly special- it is so refreshing and long thanks to the high acidity of the 2013 harvest and the deft use of dosage. This wine should age for a long time if you like it- don’t be afraid to lose a few in the cellar.

This is an absolute perfect expression of the quality and precision of 2013 Blanc de Blanc Champagnes are displaying. There is so much personality in this bottle, tangerine, lemon verbena, fennel pollen and Crispin apples. Grapefruit makes an appearance and is an additional driver in the acidity category, the brightness that lands is full but a yeasty. A fluffy biscuit texture enters in the length of the finish. A very enjoyable vintage Champagne I must say!

When you stare down the barrel of vintage Champagne purchasing you can, like me, be somewhat intimidated that you might make a wrong turn somewhere. Price points range from expensive to quite expensive and you want to make sure that you are spending your money where it counts. This is the one my friends, this is the buy that makes all your worries turn into beautiful bubbles that scale up your glass as you sip gleefully and wonder how many more bottles are left at K&L. Purely made of Chardonnay grapes picked from the Cote des Blancs--the croissant shaped Mecca for dry, crisp mineral style of Champagne--the bottle abounds with crunchy toasted bread notes, flinty airs of lemon and orange blossom. The finish is so smooth that it is great by itself or enlivened next to aperitif at the start of a meal. But let's be honest, a good old fashioned fried chicken and a bottle of French champagne does the trick every time.

Notes

The 2013 vintage was one of the latest in recent history in the Champagne region and was a great success for Chardonnay. This masterful creation of chef de cave Caroline Latrive is composed of entirely Grand and Premier Cru Chardonnay: 25% Cramant, 25% Cuis, 23% Chouilly, 14% Mesnil, and 13% Vertus. It has been aged for six years on the lees and is dosed quite low at 6 grams per liter. This is vibrant Champagne that still has a creamy texture. Not a hair out of place!
