Mezonte is a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting, supporting, and preserving the production and practices of traditional agave spirits of Mexico. The main objective is to create awareness of the cultural and biological value inherent in these incredible spirits. There's a particular emphasis on the spirits of Jalisco and Michoacan, but all agave spirits could be featured. The incredible organization began in a little bar in Guadalajara where Pedro Jiminez began to educate about these special spirits. The Tepe comes from Aciano Mendoza, a native of the Tepehuano community located on the border between Jalisco, Durango and Nayarit. The spirit is primarily used for ritual purposes, and Aciano and his family prefer to live isolated from western culture. He harvests wild agave Masparillo and roasts them in an underground earthen oven. The agave is crushed by hand using wooden mallets and distilled on clay pots built by the distiller. Only 250 liters were made in this batch and only half of that was bottled for Mezonte.
