An impressive '97. A modern, international style of Rhône, here's a red with much fancy new oak, delivering wonderful toast, violet, cassis, roasted game and smoke character. Supple, ripe tannins turn this into a seductive, full-bodied, sweet-tasting winner that's very hard to resist. (PM)

The outstanding 1997 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Cadettes (36% Grenache, 32% Mourvedre, and 32% Syrah; 11,000 bottles produced) is unquestionably one of the stars of this vintage. The color is a saturated ruby/purple. The nose offers up copious quantities of cassis, kirsch, new saddle leather, Asian spices, and earth. Rich and full-bodied, with a creamy texture, low acidity, and a luscious, massive finish for the vintage, this is a superb example from a light year. (RP)

Notes

Tracing its history back to the 16th century, La Nerthe stands as one of the oldest and most beautiful estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. This "Cuvée des Cadettes" is the property's prestige bottling, sourced from a unique 20-acre parcel of vines averaging 85 to 100 years of age planted in sandy clay and limestone soils. The 1997 vintage highlights the estate's progressive style, delivering a concentrated profile of cassis, violet, and roasted game supported by 12 months of aging in small French oak barrels. As a direct import, this mature release offers a rare opportunity to experience a perfectly cellared landmark of the Southern Rhône from an estate often cited alongside the region's legendary benchmarks.
