Drawing from a perpetual reserve spanning the 2003–2018 vintages, the new NV Brut Blanc de Noirs L'Or d'Eugène was disgorged in November 2020 with 0.5 grams per liter dosage. Deep and complex, it unwinds to reveal aromas of pear, honeycomb, fresh pastry, paraffin wax and confit citrus, followed by a medium to full-bodied, broad and fleshy palate that's seamless and concentrated, girdled by lively acids and complemented by a saline finish. Coming from a perpetual reserve started in 2003, it's a delicate but cleverly opened-up, youthful style of dried apple and pear, peach and blossom, succulent with soft cherry but snappily dry and light-footed. 20% Pinot Noir adds a little structure and weight. Cédric Moussé turns out some of the Marne Valley's most refined, charming Meunier wines from the south-facing slopes of Cuisles on the north bank of the Marne river. (TH)

Vivid, with ripe, juicy black currant and green apple fruit flavors layered with notes of salted almond and candied lemon peel. Mouthwatering on the lingering, chalk-tinged finish. (AN)

The Moussé Fils “l’Or d’Eugène” Perpetuelle Blanc de Noirs non-vintage Brut is composed as a fifty-fifty blend of the base year (in this case 2015) and the solera that the domaine set up in 2003 for this bottling. The cépages is eighty percent pinot meunier and twenty percent pinot noir, with the wine having been disgorged in December of 2018 and finished with a dosage of five grams per liter. The wine delivers a lovely and quite refined aromatic constellation of white peach, apple, patissière, chalky soil tones and a lovely topnote of gently musky, pinot meunier-derived floral tones. On the palate the wine is elegant, full-bodied, focused and very long, with fine mousse, excellent backend mineral drive, bright acids and excellent focus and grip on the complex finish. There is just a touch of youthful greenness on the finish here today that could be waited out with a bit of bottle age, but it did not dissuade me from enjoying the wine right out of the blocks. If this dollop of adolescence will deter you, just tuck this lovely wine away in the cellar for two years and then have at it!

I loved the expressive, open character of this wine on the nose and in the mouth. Cinnamon and I had it with pork rillettes as a little starter and it was fabulous. The wine has lovely honey bread toast, comes across full bodied and rich but snaps into focus on the back end, which is quite dry. It made a great match for the rillettes, and I think would also be great with any manner of pate or cheese based starters. It is the mix of bready breadth and mineral tension that had me coming back for more.

Blanc de Noir lovers rejoice! This new addition to our Champagne collection fills that void of Blanc de Noir in our selections. The minute you pour it into your glass, you know that the dominant grape is Pinot Meunier. Mushrooms, fino sherry and honeycomb. Light candied spices and golden apples. On the palate, initially, it is all about the richness and lush mouthfeel. Roasted nuts, poached pear, and a spicy finish with a nice bit of light citrus. I'm going to take both Dejah's and Gary's advice and have it with a nice pork tenderloin with dried apricots. A very nice addition to our growing collection!

Cedric Mousse Champagnes are one of my top favorites, mostly because of their use of Meunier, stainless steel and malolactic. This is a great value with a ton of work put behind the making of these Champagnes. This bottling is 80% Meunier, 20% Pinot with a blending of 50% 2015 vintage juice and 50% 2003-2014 juice somewhat of a solera style but fresher. There's tons of layers and texture, a light lemon curd along with a fresh fruit bowl complexity. Some ginger spiciness shows in the mid but this is a quaffable Champagne, so easy to drink on its own. If you had to have a snack, I'd recommend a simple pate with toasted almonds and dried apricots keep it short and simple with this one.

Notes

This entirely estate-grown Champagne comes mostly from the villages of Cuisles, Jonquery, and Olizy in the valley of the Ardre. This is the area where Aspasie is, as well as where Krug sources their favorite Meunier. This area is renowned for Meunier with excellent acidity and tension, and this shows through in the brightness and length of this Champagne. Some of the fruit also comes from Chantillon-sur-Marne, closer to the river. This is a blend of 80% Meunier and 20% Pinot Noir, half of which is from reserves from a perpetual blend started in 2003, like a solera. All the vinification is done in stainless steel and the wine goes through malolactic fermentation. It is aged for 24 months on the lees, which makes for a complete Champagne given the age and quantity of the reserve wines. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer)
