Rezpiral K&L Exclusive Mexicano Series 5 (Berta Vazquez) San Baltazar Chichicapam Mezcal (750ml)
Berta Vasquez is quickly becoming a name to watch in the Mezcal world. Her soft spoken style and sweet demeanor belies and absolutely impeccable ability to craft top tier mezcals. Interesting that Rezpiral features her and Reina Sanchez prominently, as two of the most prominent female producers of mezcal, their personalities and products couldn't be more different. Berta's restrained style extends into the spirits she so caringly crafts. This wonder Mexicano (a. Rhodcantha) is no exception. This unusual agave tends to offer some serious savoriness and this batch from Berta does that, but so much more. On the nose, an obvious leathery quality is balanced by sweet orange character. These two opposing flavors are connected with an bouquet of floral aromatics that's unprecedented - rose, honeysuckle and hibiscus. On the palate, the very best black and green teas explode on the palate, slightly sweetened with honey and zesty lemon peel. Oily, textural, warming and satisfying! It's an extremely usual and welcome profile. Any love of quality spirits will understand why this is special from the first moment in the glass.

Notes
This special mezcal was selected in March of 2020 by the K&L buying team at the Rezpiral nursery in Santa Maria del Tula, Oaxaca. The Rezpiral brand is bringing some of the most honest and traditional mezcals to the US market and doing so in an ethical and responsible way that benefits their producers beyond a simple commercial transaction. The founder of the brand, Alex White, has committed to Berta Vazquez is a distillery and broker of mezcal who has become famous across the most geekiest parts of the mezcal drinking world for her ability to craft stunningly vibrant characteful yet elegant mezcal at her tiny palenque in San Baltazar Chichicapam. These Mexicano's were harvested and distilled in November of 2019. Mature agaves were selected and cut from a parcel in the semi-arid mountains in Yaxe Magdalena which abuts Chichicapam. These Rhodacantha were mature, and varying dramatically in size from one to the next, many actually capon (capped) and were shaved of all of their green and loaded onto a donkey that took multiple trips to the main road where they were loaded on a truck to be delivered to Berta's palenque. This harvest was roasted for 5 days in black oak fired oven, before being milled by horse drawn tahona and traditional fermentation in wood vats. After double distillation in copper pots, it was brought to proof with heads and tails for a final yield of just 150 liters.
