2017 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Review Date: 08/2019One of the strongest wines in the vintage is the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape from Vincent Avril. This beauty has everything you could ask for. As with the 2018, the blend is heavily shifted toward Mourvèdre, and it offers a mammoth bouquet of black cherries, graphite, cured meats, Asian spices, and assorted garrigue-like nuances. Deep, full-bodied, and concentrated, it stays straight and focused on the palate (whereas the 2016 is more expansive and voluptuous), with a stacked mid-palate, ripe, silky tannins, and fabulous length. You’re going to want bottles of this in the cellar, and comparing the 2007, 2010, 2016, and 2017 over the coming two decades is going to be a treat. (JD) 98+

Notes
Josh Raynolds for Vinous: "The Avril family have long resisted the urge to make a special cuvée. The domaine’s 40 hectares of mostly old vines are split among 24 different parcels. And those sites are in some of the very best lieu-dits in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wine, which is raised in old oak foudres, always contains a goodly amount of Mourvèdre, usually about a third of the blend." (08/2021) The 2017 vintage in Châteauneuf-du-Pape was marked by severe coulure in Grenache, cutting yields sharply across the appellation. At Clos des Papes, that meant a much smaller crop for the domaine's flagship red, with the usual selection coming from their estate parcels rather than a separate prestige bottling.
