The 2018 Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus is a promising bottle in the making, offering up a deep bouquet of dark berry fruit, dried flowers, dark chocolate, espresso roast and toasty new oak. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a muscular core of fruit, ripe tannins and a long, expansive finish. Weber observes that analytically this is very similar indeed to the 1947 vintage of l'Enfant Jesus, and that wine is certainly drinking brilliantly today. Bouchard's Frédéric Weber was demonstrably satisfied with his 2018 portfolio, and he has every reason to be. Ripe but controlled, this is a very consistent range of fleshy but structured reds—which readers might think of as a more rounded version of the 2005 vintage—and elegant, fragrant whites. Indeed, only the house's Clos de Bèze showed signs of over-ripeness, as the grower who supplies the grapes for this cuvée insisted on picking late. So, as the accompanying notes attest, there are plenty of wines that merit consideration chez Bouchard this year. That's great news, as everyone wins when Burgundy's standard bearer négociant houses flourish. (WK)

The 2018 Beaune Les Grèves Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus 1er Cru, from the 3.9-hectare monopole in Grèves, has a lovely, floral, very pure bouquet that frankly puts Bouchard’s other Beaune Premier Crus in their place. The medium-bodied palate delivers supple tannin, fine acidity and pure black cherry and blueberry fruit with wonderful details on the finish. This is very classy and punches with many more expensive Premier Crus in the Côte de Nuits. (NM)

Bouchard's evocatively named parcel is a monopoly holding that covers 3.9ha on sand and gravel soils in the heart of Beaune Grèves. Picked early but still pretty ripe, this has tobacco pouch and clove aromas from 20% whole bunches, layers of mulberry and raspberry fruit, aromatic 20% new wood and a backdrop of sinewy, granular tannins. Notes

92-95pts Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "Excellent bright purple colour. The nose includes a healthy proportion of oak showing, though only 20% in fact. 20% whole bunch on the old vines which helps refresh the finish. This stretches out very well to the back of the palate and will refine with age. Good tension at the back. Tasted: November 2019."
