Reviewed February 2020The 2018 Echezeaux Grand Cru is also showing extremely well, soaring from the glass with aromas of raspberries, cherries, blood orange, incense, spices and peonies. On the palate it's medium to full-bodied, deep and ample, with a strikingly vibrant, dynamic core of fruit that's structured around fine, powdery tannins, concluding with a long and expansive finish. To produce such an energetic Echezeaux in such a warm vintage is quite an achievement.
As I wrote last year, the thoughtful, intelligent and increasingly self-assured Charles Lachaux seems to gain in authority each time I taste with him, and my most recent visit prompted the same reflection. As readers will know by now, in the cuverie, wines that were once heavily extracted and lavishly oaked are now gently macerated, with significant percentages of whole clusters, and matured in mostly used barrels. In the vineyard, the evolution has been just as dramatic. The vines' canopies are now rolled, emulating the practice of Domaine Leroy, and a new parcel in Aux Reignots has been planted at a density of fully 20,000 vines per hectare. That's hugely labor-intensive, yet it appears to be paying off, as Lachaux is able to achieve a concentration in the vineyard that permits the most gentle of extraction in the cuverie. (WK)

The 2018 Echézeaux Les Rouges Grand Cru, from the Les Rouges lieu-dit, has a delightful bouquet of vivacious red cherry, crushed strawberry and oyster shell aromas, all elegant and refined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins that frame the pure raspberry, cranberry, crushed stone and touches of oyster shell, particularly on the precise finish. Excellent. (NM)

In contrast to the expressiveness of the Clos de Vougeot, this is almost mute though aggressive swirling eventually coaxes ultra-spicy aromas of various dark berries, violet and rose petal to reveal themselves. There is terrific punch and beautiful detail to the focused and sleek medium-bodied flavors that aren't quite as complex on the dusty and mildly austere finale. Still, this is clearly more backwards than the Clos de Vougeot and may well catch it in time.

The domaine is fortunate enough to own almost one hectare in the higher part of this grand cru, which has persuaded Charles Lachaux to add a lieu-dit name on the label. The red-fruited nose is wonderfully elegant and pure if not very nuanced at present. The palate shows heft and weight, with robust tannins that counter the fleshiness of the fruit. It tightens on the finish, and fine acidity gives vigour and persistence. Drinking Window 2023 - 2040. (SB)

93-96 points Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "Another gorgeous glowing purple. Such elegance here, totally ethereal, little alpine strawberry notes a dancing delicacy, perfect detailed fruit behind, not the most concentrated in relation to his range. This was hedged rather than ‘tressed’ which may explain it."
