The only spirit imported into the U.S. from the small African island nation Mauritius, STARR rum is unique in many respects. The distillery had been in operation for nearly 100 years, but only produced and marketed locally on the island, until an American entrepreneur named Jeffrey Zarnow was given a bottle as a gift. His immediate impression was that he needed to drink this stuff all the time, and the only way to do that was to import it himself. So, through a capital partnership initiative sponsored by the African Union, Jeffrey and his partners revitalized the distillery and created a brand to surround it. With a strong commitment to fair labor practices and fair trade, the investment not only provided a boost to the distillery, but to the island's economy as a whole.
