All three Châteauneuf cuvées from Christophe Sabon are exemplary, but the Vieilles Vignes is always exceptional. Almost half the vines from which this is produced are nearly a century old, grown on four parcels with different soils. The wine is partly aged in 600-litre barrels. This has a resplendent cherry and raspberry nose, showing power but no coarseness. Although very concentrated it still has finesse, and it's rich and supple despite the underlying tannins. The finish is brisk and fresh, peppery and lively, with excellent length. (SB)

One of the wines of the vintage is the Grenache-dominated 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Chaupin. Coming mostly from a cool terroir in the northeast corner of the appellation (just to the east of Beaucastel), this wine is vinified with a small portion of stems and aged mostly in foudre (one-third is in demi-muids). It has gorgeous Grenache flair in its black raspberry, garrigue, spring flower and licorice scented bouquet. This gives way to a medium to full-bodied, elegant, and layered 2013 that has more texture and sweet fruit than just about every other wine in the vintage. (JD)

Gorgeous, with a textbook core of raspberry pâte de fruit flavors, enhanced by rooibos tea, licorice, sandalwood and warm fruitcake notes. The iron-tinged structure is well-embedded and the fruit echoes beautifully on the lengthy finish. (JM)

Bright ruby-red. Vibrant, mineral-tinged red berry and floral pastille aromas pick up note of garrigue and incense with air and show excellent clarity. Sappy, incisive and lively on the palate, offering sweet black raspberry, cherry and lavender flavors and a spicy touch of white pepper. The mineral and floral notes echo strongly on the impressively persistent finish, which is framed by silky, harmonious tannins. (JR)

Notes

John Livingstone-Learmonth for Cradle of the Rhône: "bottled last week: medium depth red. Smoky, subtle, interesting nose that holds intricate, different suggestions – red berry, smoke, nutmeg, a note of blackcurrant or cassis. The palate is closely bundled together, with digestible tannins that add weight to the finish. The gives a genuine Châteauneuf imprint, the south in the glass. It ends with taking variety, and there is good style in the Grenache, enjoyable soft and squeezy fruit. Very good. Decant this." (02/2015)
