2013 Domaine de la Janasse "Chaupin" Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Decanter
Review Date: 09/2018All three Châteauneuf cuvées from Christophe Sabon are exemplary, but the Vieilles Vignes is always exceptional. Almost half the vines from which this is produced are nearly a century old, grown on four parcels with different soils. The wine is partly aged in 600-litre barrels. This has a resplendent cherry and raspberry nose, showing power but no coarseness. Although very concentrated it still has finesse, and it's rich and supple despite the underlying tannins. The finish is brisk and fresh, peppery and lively, with excellent length. (SB)

Notes
John Livingstone-Learmonth for Cradle of the Rhône: "bottled last week: medium depth red. Smoky, subtle, interesting nose that holds intricate, different suggestions – red berry, smoke, nutmeg, a note of blackcurrant or cassis. The palate is closely bundled together, with digestible tannins that add weight to the finish. The gives a genuine Châteauneuf imprint, the south in the glass. It ends with taking variety, and there is good style in the Grenache, enjoyable soft and squeezy fruit. Very good. Decant this." (02/2015)
