In previous eras of California winemaking, "Johannisberg Riesling" was commonly seen on labels. It was likely for some sake of marketing, as Schloss Johannisberg was historically the most famous estate in Germany and the first to plant Riesling exclusively. The "Johannisberg" eventually fell away in California, but over the years a few producers did produce successful botrytised dessert wines in the method of German Beerenauslese.
