The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Au Closeau 1er Cru matures with 60% whole bunches and 60% new oak. It is not a monopole but Drouhin-Laroze is the only domaine to release a single bottling from this vineyard that is apparently so precocious that they conducted three green harvests in this vintage. It has a superb bouquet, very vibrant with vivacious red cherries, wild strawberry and mineral scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, very focused and precise with a sculpted, nuanced finish that is pure class. (NM)

Burghound

Firm reduction masks the nose. Otherwise there is a bit more volume but at the expense of ceding a bit of refinement on the energetic and nicely detailed flavors though the finish isn't quite as complex or persistent and while I'm sure more will develop with a few years of bottle age, I don't think it will catch the Craipillot.

Notes

90-93 points, Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "60% new wood 25% whole bunch vinification. This is a vigorous site due to the richness of the soil since the vines are mature, so the vineyard team did two green harvests here. Dense purple. Restrained nose, but this is really very elegant and seductive too on the palate. The wine expands beautifully to a really fine finish. Nice tingle to the finish. Tasted: December 2018."
