Concentrated but restrained with old school charm and an abundance of muscular tannins, it's easy to feel the heart of this wine, packed with liqourice, slate, black chocolate, cassis, brambled hedgerow, aniseed and fennel, with plenty of grip. Years ahead of it, an impressive wine in this exceptional vintage, offering good value. Harvest September 4 to October 21. 50% new oak, technical director Marjolaine de Coninck.

From an estate on the uptick and showing beautifully on two separate occasions, the 2016 Château Labégorce is a head-turner of a Margaux that’s based on 52% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that was brought up in 45% new oak, with the balance in once-used barrels. Sexy notes of blackcurrants, black raspberries, crushed flowers, sandalwood, and incense all flow to a medium to full-bodied, fabulously textured Margaux that carries ripe tannins, loads of fruit and richness, and a great finish. Since arriving in 2009, Marjolaine de Coninck has resurrected this estate and the wines now play with the top in the appellation.

This estate on the north side of the village of Margaux is performing at its peak. As befits the vintage it's a rich wine with big tannins. But it also has the style that characterizes a Margaux, with a smooth, perfumed aftertaste. *Cellar Selection* (RV) 94+

A wonderful Bordeaux that is showing well now. The nose is soft and inviting. It is robust and complex with a good balance between fruit flavors and classic dry finish. It will be best with food.

This wine is incredibly good! Located right next to first growth Margaux, Margaux with freshly rebuilt winemaking facilities, Labegorce is one of the best deals in Margaux right now. The 2016 is full bodied with rich, pure dark cherry, blueberry and cassis fruit and great minerality. The ripe tannins are seamlessly integrated, and subtle toast from oak aging is right on point, not overdone. As good as this is now, it will surely age well for multiple decades.

Is there a property that offers more for less in Left Bank Bordeaux than Labégorce these days? It's a tough call, but they're definitely on a short list. On the 2016, layered aromas hint at blackberry confit, crushed violets, and asphalt. While the nose hints at a brooding wine, the palate shows terrific refinement with waves of pure deep red fruit, a terrific texture, extremely fine tannin, and lingering acidity that gives it lift. This will need a bit of time, but it shows a lot of the character of the vintage and the appellation already. 2016 Labégorce is a terrific effort and a fantastic value among its peers.
