Reviewed December 2010The 2009 Rossignol-Trapet Chambertin is a flat out great wine. This is a complete and utterly stunning bottle of young Chambertin that soars on both the nose and palate. The brilliant bouquet delivers scents of black cherries, plums, raw cocoa, a touch of grilled meat, mustard seed, a nice framing of vanillin oak and a profound base of soil. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, reserved and chiseled, with a great core of sappy fruit, suave, firm tannins and stunning length and grip on the aristocratic and endless finish. A great, great wine. (Drink between 2022-2075)

Note: from two parcels of vines approximately 40 years old and a third that was originally planted in 1919. This is also notably ripe yet very cool with an unusually elegant airy upper register notes of wild red berry fruit, crushed stone and freshly ground pepper. There is a lovely floral character to the intense and well-detailed broad-shouldered flavors that possess a taut muscularity on the linear, driving, explosive and wonderfully long finish. This is not a truly big Chambertin but it is powerful and serious and more important still, impeccably well-balanced.

Medium deep colour with a slight evolution. There is another funky aspect to the nose, but again the quality of the fruit is there to knock back this slight bacterial feel. In fact the fruit is superbly intense and fills the mouth to the back of the palate. Still in a red fruit register, albeit with darker notes. Very long finish, just enough acidity and very long. Tasted Jun 2019.

The 2009 Chambertin is a big, powerful wine that sits on the edge of over ripeness. The Chambertin is literally bursting at the seams with fruit. Sweet red berries and flowers are some of the layers of nuance that take shape on the sensual finish. Tasted from tank. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022.
David and Nicolas Rossignol began harvesting on September 12th. They used a fair amount of whole clusters, ranging from 33% or so for the 1ers up to 50% for the Grand Crus. The wines saw 14-21 days of cuvaison. After debourbage, the wines were racked into oak, roughly 15% new barrels for the villages, 33% for the 1ers and 50% for the Grand Crus. The malos were early and quick, and the wines were bottled between January and March 2011.(AG)
