COIT Caravan Tea (Lightly Smoked) American Dry Gin (750ml)
Review Date: 02/2020
This tea gin is insane. I have never tasted anything like it. There are many tea gins on the market today, but typically their mediocre and not very creative. Coit's gins are all about expressing the complexity of the tea itself without losing the fact that it's a gin and should be recognizable as such. The Caravan Gin uses Lapsang Souchong as the highlight. This tea is traditionally dried over burning pine needles which impart a complex and resin driven smoke. Forever seeking a balanced profile, Gerry and Linda at Coit mixed this with Black Assam tea because it turns out if you use just Lapsang Souchong, it's much too overwhelming. Add to that their expertise in balancing tea with classic gin botanicals and you have a stupendous gin.

Notes
Locally made by founders Gerry & Linda Rowland of Napa Valley Coit Spirits is producing the best gins to utilize tea leaves. Caravan Tea is a combination of black Assam tea and Lapsang Souchong, the latter of which is dried over burning pine needles - a process first developed in 1644. The result is a strong smoky character and the famous tea was exported via camel on the Silk Road centuries ago. The distillation of Caravan Tea is balanced with fresh green cardamom pods and Indonesian long pepper to give a smoky and richly spiced gin unlike anything else we carry. It makes the perfect smoky Negroni!
