The 2017 Champs Canet chez Carillon is outstanding on both the nose and palate. The pure and youthfully complex nose delivers a refined blend of apple, pear, tangerine, citrus zest, chalky soil tones, vanillin oak and a lovely floral topnote of white flowers. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very precise on the attack, with a fine core, excellent focus and bounce, zesty acids and a very long, soil-driven and classic finish. This is really lovely and will be a very elegant example of Champs Canet when it is fully mature. 2022-2060.

The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Champ Canet 1er Cru has a beautifully defined Granny Smith apple, Conference pear and wet limestone bouquet, introverted at first but finding its voice with aeration. The well-balanced palate displays a superb line of acidity. One of Carillon’s most malic wines, with a long, spicy finish. Long-term. (NM)

Burghound

Review Date: 06/2020
*Burghound Outstanding!!* A subtle interjection of wood appears on the very smoky and well-layered aromas of various white orchard fruit, lavender and citrus zest. Once again there is excellent energy and punch to the more mineral-driven and more concentrated flavors that deliver really lovely complexity and sneaky good persistence. This is impressive and a wine that should amply reward a decade plus of cellaring.

The 2017 Pulingy-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Canet opens in the glass with scents of lemon oil, white flowers, almond paste and crushed chalk. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, textural and charming, with great cut and a precise finish. As I noted last year, this is typically the most immediate of Carillon's premiers crus, and the 2017 is showing well out of the gates. (WK)

Notes

92 points Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "Palish yellow with green tints. The most floral, the most accessible of the three Carillon 1ers crus, this is medium bodied, very pretty, a little bit saline, and more notable for persistence than for hyper concentration. Tasted: October 2018."
