I continue to love the 2016 Rauzan-Ségla, a thrillingly complete, flawlessly balanced, and borderline perfect Margaux that should be snatched up by readers. Notes of cassis, graphite, tobacco leaf, and earth all give way to a full-bodied effort that has building tannins, no hard edges, and a level of purity and elegance that’s just about off the charts. Given its purity and balance, it’s accessible today, but it will be best with 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for 3-4 decades.

The aromas of blackcurrants, sweet tobacco and sandalwood are tantalizing. Then it turns to subtle, dried fruit. Full-bodied with dense and powerful tannins, yet ending with finesse and vertical nature. Very deep. Power with finesse.

Structured and elegant, this starts slowly, and is clearly still young at this point, with firm tannins giving a slow-release to the blackberry and cassis fruits, laced with mint, black tea, cumin and liqourice. Getting even better as it ages, this has decades ahead of it. This first wine comes almost entirely from plots on Terrace 4, a wide, clay-rich strip of gravel. 3/6ph, 45hl/h yield, 60% new oak, harvest September 20 to October 15. Nicolas Audbert director.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Rauzan-Ségla drifts effortlessly from the glass with fragrant rose hip tea, candied violets and chocolate box scents over a core of fresh blackcurrants and black cherry compote plus wafts of tobacco and dusty soil. Medium to full-bodied, it delivers a great mid-palate of softly textured black and blue fruits with loads of floral nuances and a refreshing lift on the finish. (LPB)

I’ve been fortunate enough to taste 2016 Rauzan-Ségla a few times over the years and have always been impressed. But it had been a while, and a newly arrived parcel seemed like the perfect opportunity to revisit it. I was floored—this wine has leveled up in a striking way and is simply a can’t-miss bottle. Aromatically, it shows classic Margaux floral notes, a touch of blood orange, and cassis. But it’s the palate that really takes hold—pure, focused, elegant, and seamless. There’s a panoply of red and black fruits, but what truly stood out was the finish: pure Cabernet essence, long and mouthwatering, begging for another sip. 2016 Rauzan-Ségla still has a long way to go—easily another two decades—but considering how beautifully it’s drinking now, I can’t recommend it enough. This is a masterful Margaux that blends luxury and precision perfectly. It’s truly one of the greats of an unforgettable Bordeaux vintage, and as unfussy and delicious as it gets. Considering the current market price, it’s also one of the best buys in collectible Bordeaux. Absolutely superb.

Summertime blackberry bramble with a hint of leafiness provides freshness and lift to a lavish palate of dark berries, leather, tobacco, and intricate notions of Darjeeling that weave through a long lingering finish. My initial notes were: subtle, sexy, and detailed—smart Margaux. At this point in time, it sums up this 2016 Rauzan-Ségla quite nicely. Sip now or savor for later.

Notes

97+ points, Antonio Galloni for Vinous: "The 2016 Rauzan-Ségla is simply stunning. Ample and generous in the glass, the 2016 is a positively stellar wine that will leave readers weak at the knees. The flavors and textures are generous as this sublime Margaux shows off its alluring personality. Sweet red cherry, plum, pomegranate, blood orange, spice and rose petal are some of the many notes that run through this absolutely exquisite wine. The 2016 is just as impressive from bottle as it was from barrel, maybe even more!" (12/2018) 94 points, Andy Howard for Decatanter: "Owned by Chanel, this 70ha estate continues to ascend as a star within the Margaux AP. Dark red fruit on the palate and nose, smooth, classy and ripe texture with fine-grained tannins and lovely acidity to keep everything fresh. Aromatic with lifted floral and tobacco notes, and a pronounced lead-pencil character. The oak (60% new) is beautifully integrated and this could easily warrant a higher score with a further 2-3 years in bottle." (11/2021)
