I drank this with Damien Hugot and his wife at the Royal Champagne, the newly refurbished hotel and Michelin one-star restaurant just between Epernay and Reims this spring, and have been thinking about it ever since. This is a clean, refreshing style of rosé that gets hints of richness not from the small percentage of ancient vine Meunier that is added, but rather from the Cramant and Chouilly base of Chardonnay that makes up more than 90% of the blend. This is “rosé all day” rosé, with bright red fruit and racy minerality, along with top-notch chalk on the long finish.

This is a fantastic rose champagne from one of our favorite grower-producers (and direct imports) Champagne Damien Hugot in Epernay. Damien and wife Miwa have crafted a delicate, light bodied rose that is popping with red fruit character. Imagine perfectly ripe raspberries and strawberries dancing on your palate! 95% Grand Cru Chardonnay from the Grand Cru villages of Chouilly & Cramant, fermented in stainless steel tanks, and 5% Pinot Noir from a perpetual reserve in foudre. Dosage is a low 2g/L, so firmly in the Extra Brut category. If you show up to a party with this sparkling rose, you will be greeted as a hero, and its likely people will write songs about you. One of my favorite rose champagnes on the racks right now. Six stars out of five.

This is a lighter, more delicate style rose produced with mostly Grand Cru Chardonnay along with a small amount of Meunier. Subtle notes of red fruit and spice are complemented by crisp acidity and a dry, mineral-driven finish. Highly craveable rose.

This rosé is super light and quick on its feet, seemingly built around freshness and ease drinking. The palate is bright and lively, carried by gentle, fine bubbles that never get in the way. Everything feels clean, airy, and insanely drinkable, making it dangerously easy to keep pouring. There’s no excess weight or sweetness here. At its price point, this Champagne is exceptional value and a total crowd-pleaser.

Notes

This all estate grown rosé is based on old-vine Chardonnay from Chouilly and Cramant. It gets its rosé color and flavor from an ancient plot of Meunier grown just between the villages of Chavot and Monthelon south of Epernay. It is a refreshing, elegant style of rosé, great for the aperitif or to pair with a smoked salmon appetizer. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)
