More deeply hued than the 2015 tasted before it, the 2016 Lanessan showcases the character of this remarkable vintage through it's fine tannins, compact structure, and depth of flavor. Although usually about half Cabernet, it seems to take more of a center stage in the 2016. Violets, black cherry, and a touch of vanilla (only 1/3 new oak) on the aromas, the palate has compact dark red fruit, a thread of mouthwatering acidity, and an impressive texture that carries to a long, flavorful finish. This is an impressive showing and a wonderful contrast to the cool and charming 2015, but it never feels heavy or extracted by any means. I think it is the seriousness of the vintage shines through, as it shows much younger and a lot deeper in flavor. For the Bouard generation at Lanessan, this is going to be a point of comparison for a long time to come.

Always interesting1 Slightly earthy scents with pencil lead and black fruits. On the palate, dark berries, baking spices, anise. Smooth and rich and certainly a bargain.

From the excellent 2016 vintage comes this wine from Lanessan. This is savory and complex. It's immediately full of notes of graphite and mushroom, but there's dark fruit and violet here too, as well as some anise and black pepper. The tannins are light and silky, making for a well-integrated wine that is ready to drink. A perfect accompaniment to pate or creamy cheese. I, myself, had it with some camembert and it was just perfect!
