The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a finely chiseled, precise bouquet with perfumed red cherry and crushed strawberry scents loaded with minerals. This is one of the most transparent Clos Saint-Jacques that I have tasted from Fourrier. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe tannins on the entry. This is very focused, maybe a little leaner than the 2015 (recently tasted) but with a scintillating finish of white pepper-tinged red fruit that lingers in the mouth for 45 seconds. Superb. [Readers should note that this may include part of the cuvée currently being matured in amphora. Trials will begin in early 2019 to assess whether that will be done - Jean-Marie Fourrier seemed 50/50 at the time of my visit.] (NM)

Fourrier's 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques is showing beautifully, wafting from the glass with scents of dark berries, cherries, black truffles, forest floor and peonies, framed by a discreet touch of new wood. Medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, it's deep and succulent, with fine concentration, exquisitely refined tannins and a long, sapid finish. (WK)

The 2017 Clos St. Jacques was also still a bit grumpy about being tasted, but all of the pieces are in place here for a great wine down the road. The bouquet was spot on at the time of my visit and truly beautiful, offering up scents of sappy red and black cherries, a brambly touch of black raspberry, grilled meats, dark soil tones, woodsmoke, a lovely spice element and spicy oak. On the palate the wine is more closed than any of the other premier crus in the cellar today, with excellent mid-palate depth, ripe, well-integrated tannins and impressive length and grip on the still very primary finish. I am sure this will be a great wine. 2028-2065+.
