Littlemill "Old Malt Cask" 29 Year Old K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky
This one is a bit unfair. Littlemill falls into two categories. Gross and great. Those two categories exist under one umbrella, impossible to find. But what we don't see is great Littlemill at a seemingly sane price. Even if this weren't a closed distillery that's impossible to find I don't think this would be an absurd price to ask for a great old nearly 30 year old malt whisky, but when the owners of the brand are selling their 25 year old version for upwards of $4000, I think we can consider a 29 year old version at less than 1/10th the price a legendary deal. Also, this one TASTES great. The nose starts with tons of toasty oak, but that doesn't overwhelm the wild tropical fruit, mango, exotic spices, hints of fancy tea, savory herbs, a slight briny quality and the tiniest whiff of almond oil. The palate is zesty, totally alive, big fruit and big spice, not at all tannic or over oaked. This one only needs the tiniest drop of water, if that, to tame the toasty oak and bring out the freshness and wild fruit. An obvious choice, but also soon to be ghost.

Littlemill offers a chance to taste history in more ways than one. Once famous for its beautiful and elegant triple-distilled malt, the distillery had been closed since the early '90s, and it tragically will never be reopened, as it burned to the ground in 2004. While extinct distilleries carry a lot of cache, Littlemill has never quite had the same pull or commanded the same prices as names like Brora and Port Ellen. Until recently that is. The original Littlemill stills and the remainder of Littlemill's whisky has settled into the Loch Lomond ownership group. A fitting resting place as the design of the Loch Lomond distillery itself was originally inspired by Littlemill. Under Loch Lomond's stewardship, 2019 has seen two official releases of Littlemill - a 27 year old bottling which sells for roughly $2500 and an ancient 40 year old bottling which clocks in around $6K per bottle. While I'm quite sure these are tremendously good, I know where my money goes. It's impossible to expect deals like this will come around again. The whisky itself is stunning. Ripe fruits covered in cream blend with sweet cereal notes are redolent on the nose. What would have once been a very light bodied whisky has grown over nearly three decades into an elegant push and pull between spice, savor, and sweetness that drinks with weight and presence. This is likely the last chance to purchase such rarities at this price.
