Including 9% Merlot, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is a magical Cabernet as well as the finest wine made at this estate to date. Massive notes of blackcurrants, scorched earth, cedary spice, and leafy herbs all flow to a full-bodied Red Mountain Cabernet that has awesome purity of fruit, a layered, multi-dimensional texture, no hard edges, and a great, great finish. It’s going to benefit from a handful of years in the cellar and keep for two decades.

Blended with 9% Merlot, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Upchurch Vineyard has an impressive nose that embodies the essence of a world-class Cabernet. It doesn't have the pyrazine notes of green bell pepper on the nose, as the fruit is focused yet almost shy. After I got the glass spinning, the aromas blackberry, blackcurrant and black plum all sing with elegance and ease. The medium to full-bodied palate is clean and focused, showing a mineral tension with a balanced backbone with an excellent structure to carry this wine for decades. The wine is finessed with a silken tapestry of complex black fruit and rocky earth that drinks with excellent precision. The wine ends is long and taut on the extended finish that continues to evolve and show more of its secrets as time goes on. It's an exceptional wine that should age in the cellar like a champion. I have a feeling that the price is going to increase, so get it now. Only 625 cases made. (AM)

Bright, dark red-ruby. Very sexy oak-driven scents of raspberry, sandalwood and spices convey noteworthy lift. A wonderfully silky and plush yet firm wine with concentrated, delineated flavors of huckleberry, raspberry, menthol and licorice pastille. The very long, mounting finish features suave, sophisticated tannins and terrific verve. Really outstanding retention of acidity for such a plush, ripe wine, and not a bit heavy. (14.6% alcohol; aged in 100% new oak) (ST)

The aromas are locked up at first, displaying notes of earth, dark cherry and spice. Dense, focused, structured fruit flavors follow. One of the wines of the vintage. Don't go near this one until at least 2024. It will have a long life in the cellar beyond that. *Cellar Selection* (SS)

A simply spectacular, refined, pure, precise wine that The Wine Advocate correctly calls "world-class Cabernet". This wine truly has the wow factor but it's not from sheer weight or power...it's all about the wines flawless balance, filigreed texture and ultra fine tannin structure. There is lovely purity to the fruit but also a wealth of complex cigar box notes and woodsy spices. Turned earth, hot stone and graphite add another layer. Stunning now as a young wine and totally drinkable today...but I can't help but think this will only get better and better as the years go by. I'd love to see it in 10 even 20 years time. A beautiful rendition of Washington Cabernet from master craftsman Chris Upchurch that can stand shoulder to shoulder with the very best of Bordeaux.

A world-class stunner from start to finish. It opens on the nose with ripe redcurrant, red and black cherry, and black raspberry with accents of tobacco, red rose, cedar, brick dust, cinnamon, vanilla, leather, and licorice root. The flavors are deep, saturating, and long on the palate while maintaining a beautifully poised structure and impeccable balance. Wonderfully complex and complete. It is already a pure joy to drink now, though it should evolve extraordinarily well over the next 20 years. If you ever wondered what Red Mountain Cabernet is all about, here's your ticket to the show.
