The second wine is led by 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 37% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. The picking here started on September 20th, and finished on October 20th, as per the grand vin. This is beautifully dark and defined, with fresh black plum cream, black olive and dried currants. The palate has a beautiful composition, fresh and pure, with delicious presence, all black plum, black olive, violets and currants, holding a mirror up to the nose, with a supple and elegant, well balanced poise. Beautiful harmony, composed but fresh, with a great grip, while the ripe finish, loaded with polished, ripe, correct tannins, is long and charming. Overall this is open and fresh, but also textural, balanced, with a fine tannic grip at the end. It is a very serious second wine that is going to provide brilliant drinking.

The stunning, ripe dark berries and plums on the nose are attractively dressed and deliver a wealth of assertively rich and juicy dark-fruit flavors on the palate, in balanced and elegant yet powerful style. The best Réserve de la Comtesse for some time. Second wine of Château Pichon-Lalande. Try from 2023.

An incredibly luscious, gorgeously balanced and rich Réserve de la Comtesse. They picked right up until the light October rain, waiting until it had passed before continuing. Those extra few days have contributed to the particularly soft and silky quality of the tannins in the Cabernet Sauvignon, which have a gorgeous density to them. This is a serious wine that could stand up against many Médoc grand vins. The blend here is 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. (JA)

From a vintage compared to 1996 and 2009, both terrific yet different vintages, the 2016 Reserve de la Comtesse is a beauty with a classic Cabernet nose of blackcurrants, graphite, lead pencil, and flowers. It's medium-bodied, supple, incredibly elegant, and seamless on the palate, with loads of charm and character. It's another second wine that delivers the goods.

2016 was an epic vintage at Pichon Lalande, and this Reserve de Comtesse carries that character beautifully at a fraction of the price of the Grand Vin. There's a bit more Merlot that usually goes into the Réserve de Comtesse, as is the case in the 2016, but it is still crafted on a majority Cabernet Sauvignon. That herbal thread that's the signature of this treasured estate shows through even at this level, but it also is a bit more giving with more rounded red fruits to compliment the graphite, currrant, and Pauillac structure. Still, the pedigree is hard to miss. In time, this will age beautifully, as most wines from Pichon-Lalande tend to do, but there's plenty going on already. Kudos to Nicolas Glumineau for a fine 2016 and a Reserve de Comtesse that seems to be leveling up under his tenure.

When I see “Buy!” in the chaotic alphabet soup of my tasting notes, I know this is one to sit up and pay attention to. Unfortunately, I was slow on the uptake and I missed out. So I write this mostly as a wistful lament to myself as I hit the “Add to Waiting List” button. If you enjoy the elegant side of Bordeaux, I advise you to do the same. This one keeps the Moët & Chandon in a pretty cabinet—stately, graceful, and poised. Plum, violet, soft sandalwood and delicate spices. The finish is as lengthy as it is fastidious and precise, punctuated by a cheeky lick of iron and pencil lead. This is a wine for polite company—if you’re that way inclined.

Notes

94 points Antonio Galloni for Vinous: "Sensual, racy and inviting, the Réserve de la Comtesse is one of the very finest wines readers will find in its peer group. Sweet dark plum, rose petal, spice and chocolate notes build into the silky, beautifully resonant finish. The 2016 has so much to offer. Moreover, it is flat-out delicious. Don't miss it!" (12/2018)
