This is the final blend as presented at the primeurs, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 52% Merlot, 11% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc, and it took 42% of the crop. The élevage was 12 months in oak, with the traditional system of one-third each new, second-fill and third-fill barrels. The nose is striking, somewhat reminiscent of the 2010 vintage, with very dark and savoury fruits, salted olives and currants especially, along with a notable saline and gravelly lift here. It is immediately more imposing and broader on the palate than Tronquoy-Lalande tasted alongside, leading with a wealth of savoury black fruits, black beans and black olives, with a peppery substance, and this comes across on the palate, all wrapped up in a ribbon of savoury and salty notes. It is cool and yet also textured, with dark saline fruits. The tannins take a backseat, but they feel tightly knit and integrated, wrapped around the acidity and the fruit, which has an almost bouillon -like intensity of flavour. It is long, stony and peppery in the finish. An excellent second wine which will age well.

Great depths of fruit, this is dominant Merlot in the blend but the character of the vintage is all about blackberry, cassis, graphite, tannins and firm, well defined tannins, and they dominate the palate - confident but already welcoming, this is a great 2nd wine, one of the standout successes of an exceptional year. The Petit Verdot went entirely into the Dame de Montrose in this vintage.

The 2016 Dame de Montrose is also gorgeous, and the second wines of Bordeaux continue to gain in quality. A blend of 52% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aged in 30% new oak, this beauty has impressive amounts of creme de cassis, graphite, violets, and damp earth that give way to a medium to full-bodied, layered, pure, and seamless beauty that has real class. It’s well worth seeking out and will hopefully help you to keep your hands off the grand vin for at least a few years.

Extremely perfumed and beautiful with bright, violet and plum aromas. Full to medium body, very fine and firm tannins and transparent fruit. Linear and refined with a very long finish. Second wine of Château Montrose.

Between the vintage, the brilliant expression of Montrose character, its current evolution, and our market-leading price, the 2016 Dame de Montrose is easily one of the best buys on our Bordeaux shelf. Often considered one of the region’s all-time great second wines, the 2016 vintage—an outstanding year in which the Grand Vin earned multiple 100-point scores—delivers a next-level experience that many other estates would be proud to call their flagship release. Aromatically, there’s classic cassis and wild black fruit, but the palate leans more toward red fruit, with remarkable purity, great texture, and a long, mineral-tinged finish. Now nearly ten years from the vintage, the tannins are beginning to soften, offering a level of accessibility that makes it especially appealing today. That said, it’s just at the beginning of a long drinking window, and I’d expect another five years before more mature flavors begin to emerge. All in all, this is a compelling, delicious, and dynamic release from Montrose—full of character—and one I can’t recommend highly enough.

Another one of these fantastic re-releases of second labels for very little $. A complex nose of dark red fruits, light anise, and clean wood scents. In the mouth, lively tannins, with deep red and black fruits. Generous black licorice flavors on the lingering finish. This wine is inviting and supple and balanced. It is also elegant and extremely drinkable.

There's something really intoxicating about the opening aromas of this wine, once it's had just a little bit of air. Dense and tarry black with touches of green peppercorn at its core, the nose goes straight to the very center and then unfurls outwards, red and softer more ripe black fruits tumbling out but keep a more savory note the whole way through. The tannins are incredibly well integrated and really fine, the fruit on the palate is ripe and plump, cherries, blackberries, and cassis all playing around just a little bit and intermingling with a little bit of an oil cured olive component. This is a lot of wine for the price, and while it might not be your Tuesday night bottle, this is absolutely a solid option for Friday night or when you have some friends over and you want to open something a little bit nicer, but nothing that you're going to regret tomorrow. Absolutely delightful.
