2015 Barde-Haut, St-Émilion

Review Date: 03/2020An awesome Saint Emilion, the 2015 Château Barde-Haut showed even better on this occasion than on release. A huge nose of sweet crème de cassis, jammy blackberries, violets, leather, and dried herbs gives way to a full-bodied wine that has a great mid-palate, ripe, silky tannins, not a hard edge to be found, and a great, great finish.

Aromas of blackberries, blueberries, wet earth and black tea. Full-bodied, dense and layered with medium, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Shows focus and power.

The 2015 Barde-Haut has a lovely bouquet with black cherries, raspberry and crushed stone, wilted rose petal and iris flower emerging with time. The palate is finely chiseled with crisp acidity, much more precision than previous vintages and added sustain on the finish. A turning point for this Saint-Émilion estate. (NM)

A restrained style, with a core of damson plum, raspberry and cassis flavors held in check for now by fine-grained cedar, sanguine and iron hints. There's racy acidity running underneath and a long, focused finish, so cellar this to let the two sides meld fully. (JM)

Usually one of the top high-end values in Bordeaux, Barde-Haut's 2015 take things to another level. Aromatically it is incredibly intriguing, nuanced, and dynamic. While the core seems very traditional St-Emilion, there is a wild blue fruit note that keeps showing through. The palate shows terrific focus and balance, certainly dialed back from the bigger, more flamboyant styles of, say, 2009 or 2010. But qualitatively it should be in the same conversation. A bright burst of acidity carries deep red fruits, hints of earth, minerality, and mouth-coating tannins. The 20% Cab Franc shows up through the finish in a very engaging way. This is a lot of wine for the price and should thrill Bordeaux fans of all types over the next 15-20 years.

Email JohnOne of our more estimable producers has to be St-Emilion’s stunning Château Barde-Haut, under the wise, felicitous guidance of Hélène Garcin-Leveque and her husband Patrice. Her unmatched dynamism as an ambassador of her family’s portfolio and his intimate, working knowledge of the amphitheater of vines under his watchful eye, are the epitome of synergy. The 2015 Barde-Haut St-Emilion $44.99 is on track to be one of the best wines ever produced at this estate, echoing the words of the Patrice Lévèque, “no makeup, just a truthful wine that will age!” An elegant, richly imbued wine, with aromas of ripe black plum and bright cherry following through on the palate with touches of spice, loam and leather. This wine will evolve for another decade if you have the desired patience, but why wait?

Email AlexThe wines of Barde-Haut have been on an upward trajectory since Hélène Garcin-Leveque took over years ago. The 2015 is a wonderful culmination of a great vintage, beautiful St. Emilion terroir and prime winemaking.
80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc - plenty of heady ripe berry, tart cherry aromas, dusty leather and black pepper. The texture is so smooth and elegant, and the sweet fruit has a nice bright finish that begs for the next sip. This is great, top vintage St. Emilion.
