The 2012 Mazoyeres-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from 50-year old vines and this vintage includes 50% whole cluster fruit. The stem addition lends the aromatics more complexity and nuance, fresh blackberry and boysenberry fruit complemented by hints of marmalade and quince. The palate is medium-bodied with silk smooth tannins that are a little fuller and more rounded than the other grand crus from this domaine. It lends this Mazoyeres fine weight and persistency, the finish neat and tidy with an undercurrent of mineralite and edginess. This is one of the best from Christophe Perrot-Minot this year. (NM)

A dark, inward wine, the 2012 Mayozères-Chambertin is endowed with stunning depth. Black fruit, chocolate, new leather, dark spices and violets saturate the palate. The 2012 is powerful and dense to the core, although the inclusion of 50% whole clusters does add an element of lift on the finish. The 2012 possesses substantial intensity and stuffing, all informed by decidedly baritone-inflected overtones. (AG) 94-96+

Burghound

This possesses a brooding nose that is compositionally rather similar to that of the Charmes except that the sauvage aspect is notably more pronounced. There is a lovely sense of vivacity to the big, broad and robust flavors that possess plenty of concentration and focused power while delivering flat out astonishing persistence. The mid-palate is replete with seemingly buckets of dry extract that not only stains the palate but also buffers the formidable tannic spine on the impeccably well-balanced finish. This is a very serious wine that will definitely require extended cellaring to realize its full potential.

Bright, dark red. Expressive nose melds raspberry, black cherry, mocha, coffee, tobacco and spices, lifted by a topnote of orange zest. Concentrated and wild on the palate, offering terrific sweetness and thickness but also outstanding inner-mouth tension. Dark fruit flavors are complicated by a saline quality and a hint of game. The explosively long, ripely tannic finish shows a medicinal reserve that suggests this wine will evolve very slowly. (ST)
