The 2011 Barbera Monleale is in a gorgeous spot right now where it is just beginning to enter the early plateau of its maturity. Scents of tobacco, worn-in leather, dried cherry and incense add striking aromatic nuance. Powerful and dense on the palate, the 2011 offers a captivating interplay of rich fruit from the warm dry year and the slightly mature notes that have developed in bottle. This is such a joy to taste. (AG)

Mid-deep ruby-garnet. Again, showing development of balsamic volatility and dried notes to the black cherry fruit, but unlike the Pertichetta, there is still some fresh fruit character and a more even maturity profile. Toasty, spiced oak also adds complexity. Blackberry and black-cherry palate fruit is supported by brisk acidity. Firm, chalky tannins emerge through the quite long finish. 16/20 points. (TJ)

Although Walter Massa is best known for his Timorasso wines, he's also making impressive reds including this Barbera. His 2011 Monleale reflects the warmth of the vintage with delicious berry fruit, mild acidity and prominent ripe tannins that add an attractive rusticity. It's a mature Barbera from a warmer year that's drinking perfectly now. A rare treat.

Notes

Vigneti Massa is located in eastern Piedmont in the province of Alessandria in the hills above Tortona. The grapes were fermented with native yeasts and the wine aged in barrels for two years before aging in bottle for another year prior to release.
