Review Date: 01/2018The 2016 Vaucrains is surprisingly red fruity this year- particularly given how black fruity several of the other crus here that often show a lot of red fruit have turned out in thisvintage. The wine is stellar, offering up a very precise and promising bouquet of cherries, redplums, gamebird, a great base of soil, lavender, woodsmoke and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nascently complex, with a sappy core of fruit, stunning backend mineral drive, ripe, fine-grained tannins and a very long, properly reserved finish. This will be a great vintage of Vaucrains. 2030-2085+.

Deep black centre with purple rim. The bouquet is clear-cut, chiselled, promising great concentration along with a sense of nobility. Piercingly intense, the fruit is predominantly black in style, along with some very dark raspberry and hint of redcurrant. This has real depth and intensity, evidently for the long term. Tasted Oct 2017.

There are just nine barrels from 1.5 hectares of vines this year, so make the most of the 2016 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Vaucrains if you can locate a bottle. It has a very intense but classy bouquet with pure red cherry, cranberry and wild strawberry scents infused by cold stone aromas. I adore the delineation of these aromatics. The palate is defined by filigree tannin, pitch perfect acidity, an almost sorbet-like freshness than dovetails into a lightly spiced, fine boned finish that is a pure joy. This may even surpass the 2015. (NM)

Bright, dark red-ruby. Classic Vaucrains aromas of dark raspberry, black cherry, dark chocolate and violet, plus a whiff of menthol. Sappy, highly concentrated and dense, showing a very fine-grained texture but serious medicinal reserve in the early going. Finishes very long and subtle, with broad, late-arriving dusty tannins and a repeating note of dark chocolate. The most powerful of these 2016s but also unusually silky for young Vaucrains.
