Blending 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Malbec, 19% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot, this is an elegant, structured red, elongated by silky tannins. Cedar, sage, red currant and turned earth provide an understated savory personality. (VB)

Bold, juicy black-currant flavors contribute to this wine’s lovely richness while its tannins feel a little ropey and thick. The fruit lasts past the tannins, so it may just need bottle age to absorb them.

Firm and spicy, featuring a dash of herb and dill-laced oak and a tight core of raw-textured dark fruit, crushed rock and gravel flavors. Given the muscle and tannic flex, this will benefit from cellaring. (JL)

With Napa wine prices soaring to unattainable levels for everyone except for the Koch brothers and maybe Elon, its nice to know you can still find a wine like this. Acumen's mountainside red blend uses 70% Cab from different parcels on Atlas Peak. Deeply structured and full of black fruit and spice. Drinks twice its price easily. Consult Alex and Christina below if you don't believe me.

A spectacular offering from the small but highly regarded production Acumen, the 2014 Mountainside offers a beautifully elegant Bordeaux style wine. Warm, dark fruit are perfectly complimented by the herbal notes from higher elevation fruit and choice of French oak gives beautiful spice notes. While there is plenty of fruit here, this is a balanced and focused style as opposed to a overly lush Napa cab and shows concentration and power that this area can achieve.
Acumen is a highly sought after, small production "cult brand" in Napa Valley, and the 2014 Mountainside Red exceeds expectations, drinking more beautifully than Napa wine twice the price. A Cabernet based Bordeaux blend, the wine is elegant and expressive of Atlas Peak, which sees a significant drop in temperature in the evenings, encouraging acidity and concentration of flavor. With 18 months in 72% new French oak, the wine is artfully balanced and elegant, highlighting the unparalleled abilities of the late, famed founding winemaker Denis Malbec, previously of Chateau Latour.

Notes

Acumen works with fruit from multiple vineyard sites on Napa's Atlas Peak. A unique appellation in the region, Atlas Peak is often cooler and drier and its volcanic, rocky soils and steep slopes produce a character unlike what we know of Cabernet from the valley floor. Winemaker notes: "This full-bodied wine starts with fragrant aromas of black cherries, English roses, mocha, sweet earth, and fresh blackberry pie. On the palate, we find mouth-coating flavors of blueberries, Santa Rosa plums, and baking spices with a pleasant grip of ripe tannins coupled with notes of toffee, rhubarb compote, fresh sage and cigar box on the long and pleasant finish. Cabernet Sauvignon driven Bordeaux style blend. 18 months in 70% new French oak."
